Interview with Michael Barnum of BDC To Go

We recently sat down with Michael Barnum, of Michael Barnum Studio and manager of BDC To Go, to talk about what pieces he can’t live without and learn about the inner workings of BDC To Go. Michael has been a creative force in the New England design industry for over 20 years and really wanted to create an environment to help guide his clients to a broader way of elevating the way they live their everyday lives.

BDC: What can people find at BDC to Go?

MB: Savvy shoppers can find decorative items of all kinds from many of the showrooms in the Boston Design Center including upholstery, case goods, dining tables, beautiful carpets, lamps, artwork and accessories.

BDC: What are your favorite pieces?

MB: We have several wonderful pieces that I would place in rooms that I’d design such as a wonderful charcoal mohair covered bench From Bright Furniture Group, a chocolate and blue striped silk and wool Tibetan carpet from Stark and a stylish Art Deco style desk from Grand Rapids. Collectively they would be very smart together!

BDC: What’s the best bargain?

MB: It seems the largest pieces have the biggest discounts including a 103″ distressed trestle dining table (with 2 additional leaves). It was $18,000 and is now reduced to $5800.00! Perfect for a large dining room or a big vacation home. It’ a stunner! Another great buy is a fully upholstered camel back queen bed with upholstered rails originally $2100.00, now $1200.00, in a neutral sand colored woven. It’s just super to have pieces like this at such substantial savings and you get instant gratification! Cash-n-carry!

BDC: Describe the automatic markdown system.

MB: We resurrected the ole Filene’s Basement pricing method. All items come in at BELOW designer’s cost to start.  30 days after that, the item is reduced 15%.  Another 30 days it gets reduced 15% more. If an item remains for more than 90 days the showroom either removes it or BDC To Go will donate it to charity. This keeps the showroom fresh and rotating.

BDC: Can anyone come to BDC To Go?

MB: Yes. This replaces the twice yearly Treasure Hunt sales we have held in the past. Everyone is welcome. Each item is clearly marked with the original retail price and the new reduction scale prices. We are open Tuesday through Friday from 11-4. So far the response has been very positive and people are really excited to have this regular resource for cash and carry items.

BDC: When you come to BDC To Go what information should you bring with you?

MB: Your want list! And if you are looking for specific items, then measurements would be prudent.

- Thanks Michael for taking the time to answer our questions about BDC To Go! Remember to stop by the new BDC to Go showroom!
